The Waywayseecappo Wolverines put together a full team effort on Friday night in Neepawa as the club picked up a 4-1 victory over the Natives on opening night of the 2019-20 MJHL Regular Season.
It sure wouldn’t take long for the Wolverines to pick up their first goal of the 2019-20 season. Jack Kennedy picked up a rebound in front and made a nice move to beat Peterson which would give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead 2:05 into the first.
Rayman Bassi and Reagan Bassi picked up assists on the scoring play with Bassi making a nice deke to get the puck in front.
With six minutes to play in the first, the Wolverines powerplay would go to work. Jack Kennedy would score his second of the night to put the Wolverines in front 2-0 on a nice passing play from Tyler Shetland and Tyler Leibl.
Waywayseecappo would continue to apply pressure early in the second, and it would pay off. Lonan Bulger scored his first career goal when his point shot beat Peterson from a distance to give the Wolverines a 3-0 lead. Jaymes Knee made a nice play to chip in with the lone assist.
Just past the midway mark of the second period, Eli Lieffers picked up the puck on a broken play and beat Thomson Phinney to cut into the Wolverines lead at 3-1.
The Wolverines would take back to back penalties to start the third and would find themselves in a battle to kill them off. Shortly after some more 5-on-5 action, the Wolverines would get a powerplay of their own.
Jaymes Knee would tap in a rebound past Ethan Peterson to give the Wolverines a 4-1 lead just beyond the midway mark of the third. Matt Kasowski and Alex Lucken connected on the goal to pick up assists.
Neepawa would put on some late pressure, but the Wolverines would come away with a 4-1 win to start the regular season 1-0-0-0.
Next up for the Wolverines is their home opener on Saturday night in Waywayseecappo at 7:30.
