Wolverines lose overtime thriller to Pistons

The Waywayseecappo Wolverines were up to the task as they took on the top team in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League, losing 3-2 in overtime to the Steinbach Pistons.

Brandon Funk scored the overtime winner 1:18 into the extra frame as he went end to end to give the Pistons their 8th straight win.

The Wolverines started the scoring when Garett Zasitko scored 8:07 into the game as his initial shot hit the post, but the puck came right back to him, and he was able to rip it past Pistons goalie Beck Liden.

The Pistons tied it up later on when Trey Sauder got his 16th of the season on the powerplay to make it 1-1.

The Wolverines scored first in the second period as well when Sam McPeak took the puck away from Leo Chambers in the slot, and scored shorthanded to make it 2-1.

Just over three minutes later, Noah Szabo scored to tie it up once again with a great individual play.

In the third period, the game went back and forth, with both teams close to scoring, but the Pistons had their chances at the end of regulations, but was not able to beat Kaiden Kirkwood, who ended up stopping 50 shots in the game.

The game went to overtime, where Funk scored the winner.

The Wolverines got a point in the loss, and were able to creep back within five points of the Neepawa Titans for the final playoff spot in the West Division.

They next play the Winkler Flyers on Sunday at home at 6:00pm.
