Team Effort Leads Wolverines Over Stampeders

Kris Bladen and Conrad Phillips scored while Thomson Phinney stopped 27 of 28 shots to launch the Waywayseecappo Wolverines to a 2-1 win over the Swan Valley Stampeders on Sunday night.

In the first period, newcomer Kris Bladen hopped on a rebound in front and tucked it behind Stampeders netminder, Mikael Foucher to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead. Rayman Bassi and Conrad Phillips connected on the assists to make the play happen.

Although each team took a pair of minor penalties in the first, it was really a quiet period between both clubs.

Just after the second-period media timeout, the Wolverines would add to their lead. Nick Doyle would spring Conrad Phillips on his second breakaway of the night. Phillips would snap one over the shoulder of Foucher to put the Wolverines ahead, 2-0.

In the third period, Mattias Dal Monte would strike on the powerplay for Swan Valley, bringing the Stampeders to within one as the Wolverines held a slight 2-1 lead.

Swan Valley would press late in the third period with their goalie pulled for the extra attacker but the Wolverines would hang on to capture the 2-1 victory.

The win moves the Wolverines to 9-4-2-1 on the year. Up next for the club is a matchup on Tuesday night against the Selkirk Steelers in Waywayseecappo at 7:30.
