Hubert Clarke named Wolverines first pick

The Waywayseecappo Wolverines selected defencemen Hubert Clarke of the Winnipeg Thrashers Under-17 AAA team with their first pick of the 2023 MJHL Draft.

The Winnipeg, MB product was drafted 6th overall in the draft, for the first of two Wolverines picks in the first round.

Clarke had 18 points in 27 games this past season for the Thrashers and added four assists in four games in the playoffs.

Two picks later, for 8th overall, the Wolverines selected Mikey Thomas of the Winnipeg Bruins Under-17 AAA team.

The left winger had 24 goals and 17 assists in 34 games last season, and had 7 points in 7 games as the Bruins won the provincial title.

In the third round, the Wolverines selected Cohen Pilkington of the Pembina Valley Hawks Under-18 AAA team. The Altona, MB product had 20 points in 40 games this past season.

The Wolverines selected Conner Weber-McKay in the fourth round. The Winnipeg, MB product played with the Parkland Rangers Under-18 squad this year. The forward picked up 17 points in 37 games as a 15-year-old.

Hayden Paupanekis was the Wolverines fifth selection in the draft. He played for Rink Hockey Academy Under 18 Prep team in Winnipeg this past season. He had 39 points in 29 games.

In the sixth round, the Wolverines selected a hometown boy, Brad Brandon who played with the Yellowhead Chiefs of the Manitoba Under-18 Hockey League last year, playing in 24 games.

The Wolverines finished the draft with two extra picks because they didn’t use any auto-protects going into it. The team picked Tytan Johnson from the Interlake Lightning U17 AAA, and Ariel Shuhtin-Poushkaroiv from the Winnipeg Thrashers U17AAA.
