Bennett OT Hero in Truth and Reconciliation Game

Jesiah Bennett scored his second of the game with 23 seconds left in overtime to give the Waywayseecappo Wolverines a 5-4 win over the Virden Oil Capitals.

Wearing their orange jerseys for National Truth and Reconciliation, the Wolverines had to use extra time to finally get past the Oil Capitals, who kept on fighting back all game.

The two teams went back and forth, with the Wolverines never being able to get a two goal lead, and the Oil Capitals tying the game up at every turn, including a goal by Nolan Chastko with 14 seconds left in the game to send it to overtime.

The Wolverines were lifted by Bennett, who along with the OT winner, was able to give the Wolverines a 3-2 lead in the second period. The other hero was Ryan Jossy that scored two goals in the opening frame on odd man rushes. The first was a shorthanded breakaway goal, with the second finishing off a 2-on-1 with Sean Williams.

For the Oil Capitals, the usual suspects got their points, with Josh Lehto increasing his MJHL points lead with three more points in the game, including one goal.

Both teams were 1-2 in powerplay success rate before the game, but went a collective 0/6 in the powerplay in the game.

Marek Andres got the win, while stopping 22 of 26 shots. Eric Reid picked up the loss stopping 29 in the game.

The Wolverines next contest will be on Friday night at home when they take on the Swan Valley Stampeders at 7:30pm.
