Noah Oughton scored both goals, including the power-play winner 2:11 into overtime, as the Waywayseecappo Wolverines defeated the Niverville Nighthawks 2–1 on Saturday night at the Niverville CRRC.
The victory extended the Wolverines’ winning streak to four games and improved their record to 9–2–0–1, giving them 19 points through 12 games.
Niverville opened the scoring just 1:40 into the first period when Ryan Shaugabay scored his first goal of the season, assisted by Parker Rolston.
The Nighthawks held that advantage until the closing seconds of the period. With only six seconds remaining, Oughton scored his first of the season to tie the game, with Treycen Wuttunee and Isaac Catcheway collecting the assists.
Waywayseecappo controlled the shot clock in the second period, outshooting Niverville 15–6, but neither team could break the tie. The Wolverines held a 6–3 advantage in shots during another scoreless third period, sending the game to overtime.
A holding penalty to Niverville’s Ryker Rougeau at 1:14 of the extra period gave Waywayseecappo its opportunity. Oughton scored 57 seconds later, with Wuttunee and Cale Livingston assisting on the winner.
Wuttunee finished with two assists, while Oughton’s two-goal performance earned him first-star honours. Wuttunee was named the third star.
Mariko Bercier stopped 13 of 14 shots for the victory. Ben Chornomydz made 27 saves for Niverville and was named the game’s second star.
The Wolverines outshot the Nighthawks 29–14, including 2–0 in overtime. Waywayseecappo finished 1-for-6 on the power play and killed all three Niverville opportunities.
The win gave the Wolverines the opening game of the four-game season series in their first meeting with the Nighthawks since last spring’s MJHL semifinals.
Waywayseecappo continues its road weekend Sunday when it visits the Winnipeg Blues. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
