Wolverines Welcome Kings for Truth and Reconciliation Game

The Waywayseecappo Wolverines return home tonight to host the Dauphin Kings in their annual Truth and Reconciliation Game.

Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Waywayseecappo Arena Complex. The Wolverines will wear their orange jerseys, and admission is free.

This is the sixth straight season Waywayseecappo has played at home on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The Wolverines are a perfect 5-0 in the annual game.

Waywayseecappo enters tonight with a 2-1-0-1 record and five points through four games. The Wolverines are coming off a 4-2 road win over the Portage Terriers on Sunday.

Mikey Thomas and Isaac Thompson gave Waywayseecappo a 2-0 first-period lead before Portage tied the game in the third. Captain Treycen Wuttunee restored the lead with 5:16 remaining, Adam Chipelski added an empty-net goal and Urijah Moosetail finished with 34 saves. The Wolverines’ penalty kill went a perfect 4-for-4.

The Dauphin Kings come to Waywayseecappo with a 1-2-1-0 record and three points. Dauphin earned its first win of the season Saturday, edging the Swan Valley Stampeders 3-2 in Swan River.

Bryson Yaschyshyn turned aside 54 of 56 shots in the victory. Collin Friedrich scored the game-winning goal and has found the back of the net in each of Dauphin’s first four games.

History of the Truth and Reconciliation Game

The Wolverines first hosted the game in 2021, the year the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation was established. Since then, the team has worn orange jerseys, offered free admission and welcomed residential school survivors and members of the community for a pregame ceremony.

Waywayseecappo has won all five games, outscoring its opponents 24-15.

Last season’s game featured 12 goals. Waywayseecappo trailed Swan Valley 5-3 during the second period before Cale Livingston and Mikey Thomas tied the game. Sebastien Hicks scored the winner in the third and Ben Roulette added an empty-net goal to complete the 7-5 comeback.
