Wolverines Look To Take Season Series Over Steelers

The Waywayseecappo Wolverines will travel to Selkirk on Friday night for their final road game of the 2018-19 MJHL regular season.

For Waywayseecappo, the club is coming off an impressive stretch of hockey despite losing their last game to the streaking Winnipeg Blues. Prior to Tuesday’s loss, the Wolverines went 9-3-0-1 in the month of February to push themselves into the eighth and final playoff spot.

The Run Down

The Wolverines enter Friday’s contest with the Steelers leading the season series 3-2-0-0. Their most recent meeting came on the first of the month when Isaac LaBelle stopped 49 of 50 shots in a 2-1 victory.

While the month of February was quite successful for the Wolverines, it was almost a mirror image for the Steelers with their 8-3-1-0 record. Leading into Friday, the Steelers have won three in a row which included a 9-2 thumping of the Winkler Flyers on Tuesday.

Selkirk will complete the regular season in a fourth-place finish while the Wolverines secured the eighth spot a week ago on Friday.

Keys to the Game

Getting off to a quick start on the road has been instrumental in the Wolverines success as of late. Shaking off their bus legs and banging bodies early should get the team engaged.

After the Wolverines struggled to keep the puck out of their net on the kill last game, look for a bounce-back effort from one of the league’s top penalty kill units.

The club will have to continue to stay disciplined with the Selkirk Steelers boasting a top five powerplay unit in the league.

News and Notes

A pair of Wolverines are fighting the flu and could be game-time decisions on Friday night, while another pair of Wolverines are facing upper body injuries and will sit out for the season series finale against the Steelers.

After the Wolverines lost to the Blues and the Kings beat the Blizzard, Waywayseecappo is now set to face the league-leading Portage Terriers in round one of the MJHL playoffs.

With only one game left on the regular season schedule this Sunday against Virden at home, the Wolverines will look to end off the season feeling good about their game with a chance to finish the year above the .500 mark.
