Wolverines Earn Point in Shootout Loss to Virden

The Waywayseecappo Wolverines picked up a point Saturday night, falling 5-4 in a shootout to the Virden Oil Capitals at Tundra Oil & Gas Place.

Dylan Duzan opened the scoring at 7:59 of the first period, converting a setup from Isaac Catcheway. Tyson Ulmer answered for Virden later in the period, sending the teams into the intermission tied 1-1.

Carter Haney took over in the second period. The recently acquired forward restored Waywayseecappo’s lead at 6:30, with Tavon McCorrister and Ian Buors collecting the assists. Haney added his second of the night while shorthanded at 15:03, extending the lead to 3-1.

Dylan Mickelson brought Virden back within one with a shorthanded goal late in the period.

The Oil Capitals completed their comeback early in the third. Peyton Getzlaff tied the game with another shorthanded marker before Tyson Draper gave Virden its first lead at 11:11.

With time running out, Max Collyer pulled the Wolverines even on the power play. Collyer scored with 1:23 remaining, assisted by Treycen Wuttunee and Cale Livingston, to force overtime.

Waywayseecappo generated six shots during the five-minute overtime period but could not find the winner. Mickelson then scored the only goal of the shootout, securing the extra point for Virden.

Haney led the Wolverines with two goals, while Duzan and Collyer also found the back of the net. Waywayseecappo finished one-for-four on the power play and successfully killed all four Virden opportunities.

The Wolverines leave the season-opening home-and-home series with three of a possible four points after winning Friday’s opener and earning a point Saturday in Virden.

Waywayseecappo will return to action on Tuesday when they visit the Northern Manitoba Blizzard. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Roy H. Johnston Arena in The Pas.
