Wolverines drop third straight extra time game

The Waywayseecappo Wolverines received their third straight extra time loss after a 6-5 shootout loss to the Portage Terriers, who improved to 3-0 on the season.

Hayden Lacquette scored the shootout winner, and Jayden Catellier stopped all three shots he faced for the win.

It was back and forth game all the way to the end, with no team getting a two goal lead.

In the first period, the Wolverines started the scoring with a great backhanded goal by Colby Wotton.

The Terriers responded back about five minutes later when Austin Peters got a rebound and put it in the back of the net.

Portage got out in front with a powerplay goal by Matt Wisener but the Wolverines answered before the end of the period when Cody Blight beat Bailey Monteith with a weak shot on net.

The scoring continued in the second period, as Portage scored an early goal, just 48 seconds in when Aleyandro De Leon scored off a nice feed from Matt Wisener.

Not long afterwards though Carson Baptiste tied it up after nice pressure from the Wolverines.

Waywayseecappo got out in front and chased Bailey Monteith from the net after Andrew Boucher wired home a shot to make it 4-3.

But the Terriers tied it up again after Ryan Botterill scored.

In the third, the Terriers jumped out to a lead after Austin McLean was able to chip it over Michael Bashaw.

But Cody Blight came to the rescue to tie it up with his second of the game.

Overtime solved nothing, and the Wolverines had to kill off a Terriers powerplay in the extra frame.

Then Lacquette scored the shootout winner to give the Terriers a 3-0 start to the season.

Catellier stopped 14 of 15 in relief for the win, while Michael Bashaw stopped 19 of 24 in the loss.

The two teams play again on Sunday night in Waywayseecappo.
