Wolverines drop first game in OT

The Waywayseecappo Wolverines left Virden with just one of two points after losing 4-3 in overtime to the Virden Oil Capitals in the season opener.

Davis Chorney scored at 1:53 into overtime to give Virden their first win of the season.

The game started with lots of goals, with five being scored in the opening frame, but slowed down in the second, and nothing went to the back of the net until the OT winner.

Owen Wheatley scored the opening goal 8:38 into the game when a bouncing back found his stick and he was able to beat Oil Capitals goaltender Eric Reid in close.

Virden tied the game when Luke DeCorby beat Wolverines netminder Michael Bashaw in close.

Waywayseecappo got out in front for the last time when Jack Clarke scored his first MJHL goal off a rebound.

But Virden tied it up nearly two minutes later when it was Nicholas Guberman put it in a wide open net on the powerplay.

Oil Capitals took the lead before the end of the first when Andrew Blocker wrapped it around the net and got his own rebound to make it 3-2.

Waywayseecappo didn’t tie the game until halfway through the second period when Aiden Ziprick scored a powerplay goal.

No scoring followed in the third, and then in OT it was Chorney who won it for Virden.

Eric Reid stopped 20 of 23 shots for the win, Michael Bashaw stopped 36 of 40 in the loss.

Both teams were able to capitalize on a powerplay opportunity in the game.

The two will meet once again on Saturday night, this time for the Wolverines Home Opener at 7:30pm.
