Virden gives Wolverines first loss of season

The Virden Oil Capitals got some revenge on the Waywayseecappo Wolverines giving them their first loss of the season with a 7-4 win at Tundra Oil & Gas Place.

The Oil Capitals lost on Friday night 7-2, and had lost their first three games of the season to the Wolverines.

But Virden got ahead early in the fourth game of the season series.

The Oil Capitals replicated their early game success from the first game of the season, with a 2-0 first period.

Dylan Halliday scored the first goal of the game, with Braden Fischer scoring later on, his fourth of the season.

They continued the scoring in the second with some help on special teams.

Carson Buydens beat Wolverines goaltender Liam Tereposky with a powerplay goal early on in the period.

Fischer added his second of the game with a shorthanded goal later on.

Dylan Halliday added his second of the game under a minute later, as the Oil Capitals skated off the ice and the end of the second with a 5-0 lead.

In the third, the Oil Capitals scored early to make it 6-0 after Braden Huminuk beat Tresor Wotton who came in relief for the Wolverines.

But Waywayseecappo had a bit of a comeback in them, getting three unanswered goals by Caleb Petrie, Andrew Boucher and Troy Hamilton.

The Oil Capitals got one back though from a backhand shot by Evan Groening.

Reese Malkewich finished the scoring with a goal in the final seconds.

Ryley Gross stopped 21 of 25 shots in the win, while Liam Tereposky stopped 21 of 26 in the loss. Tresor Wotton came in for relief halfway through the second for the Wolverines and then stopping 6 of 8.

The Wolverines will now take on the Swan Valley Stampeders on Thursday, in their first meeting with another team than the Oil Capitals during the MJHL regular season.
