Although the Wolverines struck first on Sunday night, it just wasn’t meant to beat as Ty Barnstable led the Portage Terriers to a 6-2 victory over Waywayseecappo on Sunday night.
It was an ideal start to the first period for the Wolverines when Ryan Brandt scored his third of the season on a point shot that beat Terriers goaltender Ethan Peterson. Jaymes Knee continued to stay hot for the Wolverines picking up an assist on the scoring play, while Anothny Bilka chipped in on the secondary helper.
The Wolverines lead sure didn’t last long after Ty Barnstable walked in the slot and beat Isaac LaBelle, tying the game up at 1-1 just over a minute and a half later.
Midway through the first, Portage would take a 2-1 lead when Joey Moffat scored his second of the season.
Despite three powerplay chances for the Wolverines in the first, they were unable to capitalize on their opportunities, heading into the break down 2-1.
It was the Ty Barnstable show in the second period as the 20-year-old Terriers forward scored a pair of goals giving them a 4-1 lead and completing a hat-trick of his own. Shots after the second period sat tied at 21-21.
Portage opened the scoring in the third period and took a 5-1 lead when Reece Henry beat LaBelle just 3:59 into the frame.
It was too little too late when Morgan Poirier scored his third of the season to cut the Terriers lead to three. Less than 18 seconds later, Billaney scored for the Terriers to take a 6-2 lead which would end up as the final. With the loss, the Wolverines now sit at 9-7-1.
Portage led the shot clock 31-27 when the final buzzer rang, while the Wolverines powerplay struggled, going 0 for 6.
Next up for the Wolverines is a matchup on Halloween night, when the OCN Blizzard pay a visit to the Waywayseecappo Arena Complex.
