With a two goal lead in the third period, the Waywayseecappo Wolverines thought they were breezing to an easier win. But in a span of 14 seconds, the game turned on its head and the Wolverines had to win the hard way.
Jack Clarke scored the overtime winner at the 1:42 mark into the extra frame to give the Wolverines an important two points and keep pace with the Virden Oil Capitals in the race for the West Division playoff race.
The back and forth game started with the Stampeders scoring 41 seconds into the game when Landen Gulutzen scored his 20th of the season.
The Wolverines tied it up when Jaxon Grosdidier was able to squek it by the Stampeders goaltender at the 6:42 mark.
The Wolverines took the lead when Adam Chipelski scored another soft goal, getting his second of the season. The goal gave the Wolverines a 2-1 lead at the end of the first.
In the second period, the Stampeders tied it up with a shorthanded goal when Ethan MacTavish was able to jump on a bad bounce off the boards to make it 2-2.
But the Wolverines took the lead when a Deegan Wapass slap-pass landed on Sebastian Stone’s stick to give them the go-ahead goal.
In the third, the Wolverines made it a two goal lead when Jaxon Grosdidier scored his second of the game with a tic-tac-toe goal with Aidan Herring.
The Stampeders got some puck luck later in the period after back to back mistakes by goaltender Mariko Bercier, MacTavish and Jake Giacobbo were able to tie the game in a span of 14 seconds. Both goals were shorthanded as well.
After a tense final minutes to the hockey game in regulation, Clarke came out the winner in the extra frame.
It was tough night for both goalies, as Bercier stopped 23 in the win, and Giaccari-Dimitriou stopped 26 in the loss.
Both teams were unsuccessful on their four chances on the powerplay.
In the out of town scoreboard, the Oil Capitals lost 8-2 to the Winkler Flyers. Because of that, the Wolverines are now just one point back of Virden for the final playoff spot, but they have played two more games. The Oil Caps will play Wednesday in Portage.
The Wolverines next game will be on Friday in Swan Valley.
