RECAP: Wolverines lose to Virden

The Waywayseecappo Wolverines lost a meaningless but gritty game to the Virden Oil Capitals on Saturday night, losing 5-3.

Falling behind 3-0, the Wolverines came back within one in the final minute, but gave up an empty net goal to wrap up the season series against the Oil Capitals.

Virden scored the only goal in the first period, as Liam Goertzen scored his 17th of the season just 3:33 into the game.

In the second, Virden opened up the lead when Lucas Laramee scored in the opening minutes to make it 2-0. Then a few minutes after that, it was Austin Osiowy that made it 3-0.

But before the period was done, Dylan Duzan squeked one by Micky Gross to make it 3-1 heading into the third.

After a Bryan LaingĀ  goal for the Oil Capitals to make it 4-1, Kurt Rookes scored twice in the period to make it a 4-3 game before Tyson Draper got an empty net goal to make it 5-3.

The game got physical in the third period, with two fights between the two teams, and the game featured 92 penalty minutes.

Jase Wareham in his first game back from suspension, stopped 40 of 44 shots in the game.

The Wolverines next game will be on Sunday as they take on the Northern Manitoba Blizzard to finish the season off.
