RECAP: Wolverines fall in shootout

The Waywayseecappo Wolverines were just a couple shooters away from breaking their losing streak, but it keeps marching on to five games as they fell 2-1 in a shootout to the Portage Terriers on Saturday night.

Trevor Hill and Rhett Platt scored both goals in the shootout to defeat the Wolverines, but give them a much needed point at least. Ben Roulette and Sebastien Hicks both failed to get it past Terriers goaltender Mitchell Kathler.

In the first two periods, both teams were unable to score with the Wolverines Mariko Bercier and Terriers Kathler stopping everything coming their way. The shots after two was 21-19 for Portage.

It took until the third period for a goal as Mikey Thomas was able to beat Kathler after a 2-on-1 pass from Roulette just 1:33 into the period.

The Wolverines were holding on to the lead, until a lucky bounce beat Bercier and the goal was credited to Trevor Hill to tie the game at 1.

The Wolverines were given a gift late in the game, as the Terriers were called for a Too Many Men penalty and then a Closing Hand on the Puck penalty back to back to give the Wolverines a 5-on-3 the rest of regulation and early parts of overtime, but they were unable to capitalize on the opportunity. On top of that, the penalties ended and most of overtime was played 5-on-5 until the first stoppage with 45 seconds left in the extra frame.

Mariko Bercier bounced back in the game and stopped 36 shots in the loss, while Kathler stopped 31 shots.

The Wolverines will come back home as they take on the Selkirk Steelers on Tuesday at 7:30pm.
