The Waywayseecappo Wolverines held a lead deep into the third period against the top team in the MJHL, but lost it and then gave up the game winner back to back to lose 4-2 to the Niverville Nighthawks.
The Nighthawks scored the game tying goal and game winner just 40 seconds apart, and then held on to win the game and sweep the back to back and season series.
The Wolverines and Nighthawks exchanged in the first period, with Mikey Thomas and Loik Leduc scoring just 1:19 apart near the end of the period.
In the second, Max Collyer was the only goal scorer in the second half of the frame, as he scored a beautiful goal on Austin Dubinsky, giving the Wolverines a 2-1 lead into the third period.
The Wolverines were holding onto the lead, but at the 11:37 mark, Dawson Zeller tied the game on an odd man rush.
Just 40 seconds later, a bouncing puck gave Kole Mears a lane to score the game winning goal to make it 3-2 Nighthawks. John Scott scored the empty net goal to put the game away.
The Nighthawks outshot the Wolverine 32-28 in the game.
The Wolverines did get some help in the night, as the Selkirk Steelers beat the Dauphin Kings, making it so the Wolverines control their destiny to win out and grab the second seed in the West Division. They will host the Dauphin Kings on Friday at 7:30pm
