The Waywayseecappo Wolverines scored three powerplay goals, including one in overtime, to beat the Niverville Nighthawks 4-3 on Wednesday night.
Dru Mushumanski scored at the the 2:29 mark in overtime on the powerplay, getting his second goal of the game, to give the Wolverines a full two points.
Waywayseecappo coughed up a two goal lead that they achieved halfway through the second period. Niverville tied it up with goals from Luke Wagner in the second, and Merik Boles with 4:24 left in regulation. The goal in the third came when the Nighthawks outshot the Wolverines 16-4 in the final frame.
Coming into the contest, the Nighthawkshad the top penalty kill in the league, and they were facing the Wolverines who was 11th in the league on the powerplay. But the Wolverines were 3/5, scoring twice in the second period, and the winner in overtime. Aidan Herring and Maddox Mason scored the initial two powerplay goals.
For the Nighthawks, they were always playing from behind, going down 1-0, before tying it early in the second, with a Carter Spirig goal. They were then down 3-1.
Jase Wareham stopped 37 of 40 shots in the game to get the win. Niverville’s goaltender, Connor Graham stopped 22 of 26 shots.
The two teams will play once again on Friday night in Waywayseecappo, to end both team’s unofficial first half of the season.
