The Waywayseecappo Wolverines have made the playoffs for the first time since 2021-22 after a buzzer beater goal to win 2-1 over the Dauphin Kings.
Coming into the night, the Wolverines knew a win would get them into the playoffs for the first time in three years. And while they were facing off against a shorthanded Kings team, the team they were battling with, the Virden Oil Capitals, were taking on the Neepawa Titans in Neepawa.
After a scoreless first two periods, the Kings got on the board first with a tip-in by Sheldon Shyiak just 1:42 into the third period.
But it wasn’t too long until Jaxon Grosdidier tied the game up with a bouncing goal to make it 1-1.
At the same time, the Oil Capitals and Titans were tied up at 2, heading into overtime. If the Oil Capitals won the game, it would force the Wolverines to have to win the game to make it to the playoffs.
When the game looked like it was going to overtime itself, a flurry around the net, ultimately led to Ryley Cyca scoring with only one second left in regulation to give the Wolverines a 2-1 win.
Just seconds after the winner, Neepawa did beat the Oil Capitals in overtime, which would’ve eliminated Virden anyways, but the Wolverines got their moment.
With the win, the Wolverines will be going to the playoffs and will take on the Dauphin Kings in the first round. Game 1 has yet to be scheduled, but it will be in Dauphin.
