Rands wins it for Oil Capitals in OT

Logan Rands was the overtime hero for the Virden Oil Capitals as they took Game 1 of the MJHL First Round series at the Waywayseecappo Arena.

The Oil Capitals capitalized on one of their two shots in overtime to steal home ice advantage.

The Oil Capitals got on the board first, when after a Carson Baptiste interference call, Trevor Hunt found an opening on the blocker side of Brett Mirwald to get the series’ first goal.

In the second, the Wolverines answered five minutes into it when Kolton Shindle wired a shot past Bailey Monteith.

But later on in the period, Colin Cook was able to score off a dribbling puck that barely beat Mirwald to put Virden out in front again.

In the third period, the only scoring was done by Reagan Rabbit as he was able to capitalize on an opportunity in the slot to find the back of the net to tie it up at 2.

The game moved on to overtime, where at 7:31 in the first overtime period Logan Rands picked up a loose puck off a blocked shot and beat Mirwald five hole.

Bailey Monteith stopped 32 of 34 shots in the game for the win, as Brett Mirwald picked up the loss stopping 21 shots in the game.

Virden was 1/4 on the powerplay with their one goal from Trevor Hunt. The Wolverines were 0/2 on the powerplay.

The two teams will play again on Sunday night in Virden for Game 2 at 7:00pm.
