POSTGAME: Wolverines cough up early lead, lose to Oil Capitals

A quick 2-0 lead was given up by the end of the first period, as the Waywayseecappo Wolverines dropped their second straight game to start the 2024-25 regular season.

The Wolverines lost by just one goal to the Virden Oil Capitals, losing 5-4 to start off their road schedule this season.

The Wolverines scored the first two goals of the game when Lucas Perry started the scoring 57 seconds into the game.

Halfway through the period, it was Brock Behrend who made it 2-0.

The Oil Capitals responded with two quick goals as well, when Campbell Epp and Ethan Guthrie scored within four minutes of each other to make it a 2-2 game heading into the second period.

In the second, Marshall Light scored on a breakaway from a long pass from Liam Englot to make it 3-2 Virden.

Ethan Guthrie made it 4-2 with a poweplay goal.

But the Wolverines got within one when Bronson Seymour was able to deflect a Adam Chipelski shot from the point to make it 4-3 heading into the third.

But the Oil Capitals gave themselves a two goal lead very early into that final frame when Brett Sabel was able to redirect a rebound in to make it 5-3.

The Wolverines got within one again when Aidan Herring got his third point of the game, but that’s how close Waywayseecappo would get.

Nik Trakakis stopped 29 shots for the win, while Jase Wareham stopped 30 shots for the loss.

The Wolverines will next play on Friday at home to the Winkler Flyers at 7:30pm.
