Nighthawks come back to beat Wolverines

The Waywayseecappo Wolverines had a lead in the second period, but gave it all the way in the second period on the way to lose 8-5.

The Wolverines got out to an early lead when Boone Mathison received a pass from Carson Baptiste and wired it past Chris Fines.

It didn’t take long though for the Nighthawks to answer when Gavin Gunderson beat Tresor Wotton three minutes later.

Boone Mathison got his second of the game tipping in a shot from the point by Leyton Smith to make it 2-1.

Then before the end of the period, Carson Baptiste got his 28th of the season with his trademarked shot that went through Fines.

For the start of the second period, the Wolverines got one to make it 4-1 as Sean Williams skated in on a breakaway and gave the Wolverines a bigger lead.

But then it went sideways.

Braden Panzer scored the first of five straight goals for the Nighthawks as he scored less than five minutes after Williams. Brendan Bottem made it a one goal game on a powerplay goal just two minutes later. Brett Tataryn then scored on a powerplay half way through the period to tie it up at 4.

In the final three minutes of the period, the Nighthawks got two goals from Gavin Gunderson and then Josh Paulhus to give the Nighthawks a two goal lead into the third period after trailing by three.

The third period there was no scoring until the final minutes when Niverville’s Isaac Rentmeester and Wayway’s Cody Blight exchanged goals to make it 7-5, before Niverville got an empty netter.

The Nighthawks were 2/4 on the powerplay while the Wolverines were 2/6.

The Wolverines will next play against the Selkirk Steelers in Selkrik on Friday February 3rd after theĀ  MJHL/SJHL Showcase.
