Wolverines draft pick Ryder Heaphy definitely felt like his hard work paid off when he was drafted in the third round of the MJHL Draft to Waywayseecappo on Saturday.
Heaphy was a Wolverines Spring Camp invite that was able to show the organization what was behind his 49 point performance in the Westman High School Hockey League last season.
“I was really happy when I saw my name right beside the Wolverines logo,” said Heaphy. “I had a fun time at camp, and I’m glad I was able to impress.”
Heaphy played with the Killarney/Wawanesa Raiders last season, helping the team get all the way to the Finals.
“It was a good year, a good stepping stone for me,” said Heaphy. “We won provincials, but we weren’t able to finish it off in the league finals.”
Ryder was able to get in a few games with the Southwest Cougars of the Manitoba U-18 Hockey League, suiting up for six games.
“It was a little faster and more physical, but all around great hockey to play in.”
Being one of the only draft picks that were able to be around the Wolverines organization, Heaphy said it was a great place to play for the weekend he was there.
“They treated me well and it was a really good vibe around the entire organization.”
