Gaffray surprised by Wolverines pick

For Wolverines sixth round draft pick Easton Gaffray, getting picked in Saturday’s MJHL Draft was a big surprise for him.

“We were driving down to Steinbach for a team meeting, and when I arrived I found out I was picked,” said Gaffray. “Obviously I had some calls to make after that.”

As much as a surprise it was for the Pine Falls, MB product, it probably shouldn’t be much of a surprise for anyone that has followed the forward’s last season with the Eastman Selects Under-17 team.

Gaffray finished third in his team in scoring with 36 points in 35 games. Scoring goals was Easton’s strong suit, as he picked up 24 goals over the season as he helped lead the Selects to first place in the league.

“It was definitely my favourite season,” said Gaffray. “We never really had a winning team before, so gettingĀ  first place in the regular season was a big moment for us.”

Gaffray mentioned he was told the organization picked him because of his ability to play against larger opponents.

“It was a surprising day for me, but I’m very excited to be drafted by the Wolverines.”
