Blues edge Wolverines in Showcase

The Wolverines nearly overcame a two goal deficit, but ended up losing to the Winnipeg Blues for their first game at the MJHL Showcase in Portage la Prairie.

Boone Mathison got his first two goals as a Wolverine, but that wasn’t enough to overcome the Blues timely goals that put them out in front and enough for them to win the game.

Waywayseecappo scored the first goal of the game when Luke Robson shovelled it past Dawson Green in the first period.

But the Blues scored two goals in less than a minute to end the period from Josiah Vanderhooft and Sean Williams.

Boone Mathison got his first as a Wolverine at 11:18 in the 2nd period, but it was responded by the Blues Eric Fawkes near the end of the period to make it 3-2.

Winnipeg gave themselves a two goal lead early in the third when Brayden Foreman got his 12th of the year 54 seconds into the period.

A tipped in shot by Boone Mathison put the Wolverines within one but that’s as close as Wayway would get, losing their fifth game in regulation.

Dwason Green stopped 26 shots in the win, while Liam Tereposky stopped 19 in the loss.

The Wolverines will now play their second and last game at the MJHL Showcase on Wednesday when they take on the Steinbach Pistons at 7:30pm.
