Wolverines on outside looking in

The wolverines have had a huge lead over the Swan Valley Stampeders for most of the year in the standings, but going into sat. night swan was looking to take over the wolves for third in the Sherwood division. The first period would solve nothing as both teams would get some chances but the score would be 0-0. In the second swan’s T.J. Fairall would score just 0:33 seconds into the period to take a 1-0 lead. The wolves would even things up 4 minutes later as Brett Pinkerton would get his 19th of the year to tie the game at 1-1. Swan would get the lead right back just 0:45 seconds later and with just 17 seconds left in the second  Fairall would get his second goal of the game to take a 3-1 lead into the 3rd. The wolves would mount a push in the 3rd firing 15 shots at swan’s goaltender Jayson Argue but he would stand tall and lead swan to a 3-1 victory. With the win swan would overtake Wayway by one point for the ever important 3rd spot in the division. Riley Feser would take the loss in his first game back with the wolves after he was brought back to Wayway in a trade with Neepawa at the deadline. Early period and late period goals continue to plague the wolverines this season and tonight was no different. The next night Wayway was to play host to the rematch between these two teams but a storm ripped through swan river and swan was unable to travel. Game is rescheduled for Sunday Jan. 22 at 7:30 in Wayway.

Wednesday night the wolves would take to the road and travel to Steinbach to take on the pistons. The wolves would play a much more solid game and end their seven game losing streak with a 7-4 win. Wayway would remain one point back of swan as they would also win a big 2-1 road win in OCN. In Steinbach Connor Pennell would lead the way with 2 goals his 8th and 9th on the year. Other goal scorers were Bobby Janzen(9),Stephane Robidoux(4),Russell Turner(9), Richard Little(10) and Brenden Luschinski with his first of the year. Zaine Walker would have a solid night registering 3 assists and get the games 1st star. Cory Simons would get the win in goal for Wayway stopping 25 of 29 shots.

Wayway would look to carry some momentum into Winnipeg Thurs. night as the Blues would welcome Wayway to the MTS Iceplex. Wayway would play a solid 1st period against a solid blues team. In the second the blues Derek Gingera would get the games 1st goal getting one past wolves goalie Cory Simons. Richard Little would get his 11th of the year assists to Brett Pinkerton and Shane Goodrunning. Once again the tie would be short lived as Brock Vanderveen would restore the lead just 0:43 seconds after Little would tie it. In the third Wayway would get numerous opportunities on the pp but as of late could not capitalize on any of their four pp in the 3rd period. Wayway would once again lose another one goal heartbreaker 2-1. The loss would keep Wayway one point back of swan for 3rd in the Sherwood division. Wayway winners of only one of their last eight games will return home for a four game home stand as they will take on the Selkirk Steelers on sat. Jan.21 game time is 7:30. The next night on Sunday will be the rescheduled game against Swan Valley and they will round out their home stand with games tues.  Jan 24 against the Portage Terriers and Fri. Jan. 27 against the Neepawa Natives. A very important home stand for the wolves to get back into the thick of things and get back on track for the final month push.
